Ven. Teresita Quevedo's motto
As a young girl, Teresita was strong-willed and a little spoiled. She was a smart and pretty little girl and she knew it. Her father, a doctor, took care to teach her from a young age that good looks and money don't make you better than others. She had a great disdain for beggars and homeless, and her father took her to give food to them and show her that Christ lives in each soul and not just those that look pleasant. Additionally, she had a great devotion to Our Lady at a young age that would grow throughout her life.
Teresita's love for life increased as she grew. She was known to be smart and a bit mischievous and never turned down a chance to party. She went to a school run by nuns, one of which was her aunt, and she often took the chance to slip into the chapel and make a visit when she could. Don't think she was a model student! She loved to talk, and one day when they were supposed to be quietly working on sewing projects at school, she was chatting with a friend when she heard one of the nuns coming to check on her progress. Knowing that they would be in trouble if caught together, Teresita threw the quilt she was working on over her friend and told her to sit still and quiet. The nun checked in on the seemingly perfectly behaved Teresita and never suspected a thing! She loved sports, especially playing basketball or watching the bull fights with her father.
There were plenty of young men who asked Teresita out, but after her graduation she was positive she knew where God wanted her, in the convent. Her family was excited and heartbroken at the same time, they would lose their bubbly, happy, little girl so soon and yet, what better path could she have chosen? She entered the convent where she had attended school and was a model, novice, however, her life as a nun was soon cut short. Soon after her taking of the habit she became very ill. Her father, who was a doctor, was called and diagnosed her with tuberculosis meningitis, incurable at the time. Knowing that her mind would soon be affected by the disease, she received Extreme Unction immediately. To her great joy, Mother Superior allowed her to make her full profession as a Sister as well, years early, so that she could enter the Kingdom of Heaven sworn as His eternal bride. The disease rapidly progressed, ravishing her mind and body. On Holy Saturday she was ready to meet her Maker. Just before she passed she looked up and exclaimed, "Oh, Mary, how beautiful you are!"
